[The video is black for a second, then there's a jostle, some blurry footage of what is obviously the bathroom in Andy's apartment, and then, finally, Nile's face. She flashes a smile, attempting to appear like everything is very normal.]
Hey, Andy. It's Nile.
[Of course it's Nile, but sometimes the device confuses Andy, so.]
When are you back?
[She needs to know how much time she's got here for damage control. She's hoping for a few hours but she'll take thirty minutes. She could probably call Nicky, get him here, get his advice and potentially use him as a human shield in thirty minutes. From behind her, she doesn't realize said damage has managed to stick its head up enough to be seen in the footage.]
[Answering a video call is far easier than making one. Especially now, since Nile started giving her little lessons in bed. Their bodies all tangled, the sheets soft against bare limbs Andy exaggerating her ignorance just a little to lure a smile onto Nile's lips.
They've made some strides. Andy's found italics (on her own) and mastered the little lock button that makes a message private. It's still a toss-up whether any call she makes is voice or video, and if it's the latter whether it'll be her face or her shoes/fingers/the ceiling that fills the screen.
Regardless, Andy can see both Nile's username when her display lights up with the incoming call, and Nile's face when she answers it. They'll just go ahead and let the condescension slide for now. Mostly because even over the phone, Andy can see the strain in Nile's smile and it makes her pulse quicken, her mind jumping to conclusions and making up reasons.]
Hey, Nile. I don't know, maybe-- [Andy's voice trails off, her attention clearly caught by the movement in the background.] What is that, Nile? In the tub.
[She's not going to lie, teaching Andy how to use the device is a lot easier when they're curled up together, skin against skin and one device shared between them. She knows Andy isn't quite as helpless as she makes out, but it makes Nile smile all the same. And honestly, she really is getting better.
It would have been smarter, perhaps, if Nile had made this a text thread--but half the time those end up as videos anyway as Andy gets too frustrated to type and just calls. Nile was trying to make it quick.
Fuck.]
Uh.
[Great opening, Freeman.] It's nothing?
[It's definitely something. At least it's not a green tentacle monster! Can they be pleased it's not a green tentacle monster?]
[There was a sense at first, perhaps, that Nile would take up the unoccupied bedroom in Andy's apartment. It's where Nicky brought all her things from the shared motel room in the Down.
But when Andy first brought Nile up -- shivering and wrapped in Nicky's jacket -- it seemed more natural to lay her down in Andy's bed and curl up next to her. For warmth. For comfort.
Since then, neither one of them has brought up the idea of Nile moving across the apartment to the other room. Perhaps Andy thought she should wait for Nile to graduate from Nicky's loose fitting t-shirts and back into her own clothes first. Perhaps they've both gotten used to the presence of another body next to them in the bed.
Either way, falling asleep and waking up together is surprisingly nice. And Andy's far less likely to throw the phone across the room in frustration if Nile's the one holding the phone.
Now, Andy's features pinch into a frown as the smudged shadow in the tub pokes its head up a little higher and resolves into something decidedly feline.]
Nile... [The word is a warning and a question at the same time.]
Why is there a cat in our tub? [Though Andy supposes, if she had to pick between a little cat and an overly friendly green tentacle monster very intent of pushing one of its tentacles into an orifice (Any. Available. Orifice) in their tub. She'd pick the damn cat.]
[Nile meant to move to the other room. She really did. As soon as things stopped being--what they were. Once she had more of the pieces of her put back together. Once she could wear clothes, or go half a day without pressing into touch like an overgrown kitten.
But that had taken days rather than hours--and by the time she thinks she might actually make it through the night without waking up and seeking warmth it's just easier to stay where she is. At least, that's what she's telling herself. They've gotten used to it--they both sleep better with breathing beside them (it's been years since Nile's slept in a room by herself, and even longer for Andy) so it just makes sense to share a bed.
Nothing weird about it.
Nile opens her mouth to reply when said shadow opens its mouth to give an ungodly howl at being left alone in the tub and she winces, even as the edges of her lips twitch in amusement]
...long version or short version?
[There's no sense in hiding the cat now, and Nile juggles the device enough to lift her out of the tub because she looks ready to scream again, and Nile is actively trying to get Andy to not hate this]
[she figures Andy will check it after they're done, and as much as she doesn't want to be in the middle of all of that, she also doesn't want Andy to worry. Which Andy tends to do when one of her people goes missing]
